Prioritising your PC on the wifi over gaming or shopping sounds like a dream! The last 12 months have been turbulent to say the least and we’ve all had to adopt to new ways of working. Never before has the need for connectivity been so important at home with the vast majority having to work from home.
How then, can you manage to keep signal through that vital Zoom or Teams call whilst your family are online too? The frustration of a slow signal can really cause issues! How many times have you had to ask or heard someone asking to wait whilst they go and ask the kids to come off gaming?! I know I have several times!
So what if you could do something about it?
Thankfully, for both the home-office and work places, there is a solution that can allow you to prioritise.
So imagine this – you can select your PC over someone else’s to have priority on the signal in the house? Making sure you’re going to be able to keep that signal during your Teams board or customer meeting? Sound good? I think so too!
DrayTek routers can automatically prioritise SIP Voice over IP traffic over all other data, with no configuration required once this facility is enabled.
The router checks for SIP Signaling packets used to establish Voice over IP calls and observes how those calls are set up. Your Zoom and Teams calls are examples of this, as is a VoIP handset. With this information it will automatically determine the Local IP address of the IP phone, and the ports used by the RTP (Real Time Protocol) stream to send the voice packets.
It then assigns those sessions to the highest priority “VoIP” queue so that the call audio is prioritised above file downloads and other Internet traffic with no other configuration required
The queuing system of DrayTek routers called Quality of Service (QoS), uses five queues to determine the importance of each type of traffic. The router’s packet scheduling re-orders packets so that highest priority traffic is sent first and with less latency than lower priority traffic, which is sent after the high priority packets have been sent.
During set up, we can help you set up options to help add prioritising your PC or calls, firewall and network signal at home or work. It can focus on calls or software, even at different times of day so you can give your priority over to the Call of Duty or Football league game that just has to be played!
Our team at SJB Smart Electricals can help identify and recommend the best router for your needs.
